Note from Keith: There are trends in fiction, just like fashion or car design. The trend recently is for artwork to feature “Women of Power”. A familiar marketing cry has been: “Let’s have a take charge woman on the cover. Women will relate to that”. Seems to me, that’s a little one-dimensional. I’ve always thought of the characters that I illustrate as real people and as such, they have strengths, but also weaknesses. A mix is much more interesting and visually, more powerful. This is nothing new either. Illustrators have been painting strong willed women for hundreds of years. The Mona Lisa is a great example. Does she look like she can kick your butt? Uh, no, but, she does look very intelligent, a little amused, a little sad, but definitely in control. That’s real and much more powerful than a picture of a woman being physically aggressive. In this piece I wanted Polgara to have that appeal. Yes, she is magically very powerful, but I wanted to show it with attitude and confidence. That is communicated more subtly through body language and more overtly by the expression on her face.
