Note from Keith: The space needed for type on this book cover was larger than normal. The type was to come down just past the middle of the painting. When this much room is needed for type, it makes the illustration space cramped vertically. Since figures are usually portrayed in a vertical position (at least on my book covers), it became a challenge to make the illustration work in spite of the constraints. To prevent the figures from being too tiny, I put them knee-deep in a swamp to cut down on their vertical height.
