Note from Keith: When I started this painting, I didn’t know what a mule looked like. I thought mules and donkeys looked the same. They don’t! I visited several farms and took pictures of what I thought were mules, only to discover later from the art director that they were actually donkeys. It was important to the story that the cover show a “mule.” After much pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth, I finally discovered the difference between the two. A mule looks almost exactly like a horse, except for its head. By the way, there are no mules in southern Wisconsin. I know. I looked! I finally found a photo of a mule’s head and put it on a photo of a horse’s body. You learn something new every day.
