Giclees

What is a Giclee?
A giclee (zhee-CLAY), is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity, high tech reproduction. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork.
Giclees are printed on canvas and then stretched over a frame. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in nearly every way. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually 'continuous tone', rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper.

Greeting The Dawn - This piece was a bookcover. In the initial version of this painting, the castle was not sitting on a hill but loomed large behind the retreating characters. The editor wanted to show the uphill struggle the characters would face in the novel so, symbolically, putting their goal on the top of a hill would get this point across.

Wizard's Study - "The Wizard I have illustrated was the narrator, and in this scene, he is in the process of narrating and magically writing a story. The books around him represent the various tales he's telling that also appear within the book. As a side note, the snack on the plate in the foreground was based on what I was eating when I was working on the piece." (Text taken from KingsGate: The Art of Keith Parkinson)

Arcane Summons - "I had the publisher ask me how elaborate my modeling set up was on this project. They thought I had set up skeletons in costume then photographed them. Actually, I made up all the figures with no reference shot for any of it. Ordinarily, I like to shoot as much reference as possible. On this project, though, the images came from my imagination." Chernevog - C.J. Cherryh book cover. Keith's thoughts on this piece: "I feel this is one of my best paintings. The entire story revolved around the heart of the man pictured lying on the stone. Consequently, all the visual elements of the picture lead the viewer's eye to the man's heart."

Wizard's First Rule - Terry Goodkind book cover. Terry's thoughts on this piece: "The cover Keith did for WIZARD'S FIRST RULE reflects this human theme through the central characters, Richard and Kahlan-the sense of the things that bridge their lives and the monumental forces keeping them apart. At the same time, in the expansive panorama, we begin to see, as do they, the wider world around them."

Valshea - Magazine cover. Keith's thoughts on this piece: "She's a half-elf, she's a magic-user, she's got great big... eyes. She's also got a pseudo-dragon familiar and a fast horse. What more could a girl want? Oh yea, jewelry!"

Northwatch - This was the initally done as a Dragon Magazine cover. It was subsequently licenced for use on a book cover. Notice the tree on the flag? This is a Ranger, in the tradition of Tolkien/Gondor, guarding the borders of a town that doesn't even know he's there.
